Stephanie Chang, WQFS Faculty/Staff Hour

Stephanie has a wealth of experience in teaching, research and programming around diversity and inclusion on campus. Stephanie started her work in higher education as the first coordinator of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Office at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then worked as a program coordinator of the LGBT Resource Center at the University of California, Irvine.

“I am extremely excited to immerse myself in the Guilford College community! As someone who is committed to the work of higher education as it relates to power, privilege and oppression, I look for campus communities that value and embody diversity, equity and inclusion on many levels,” Stephanie said.

“During my on-campus interview at Guilford, I felt, saw and learned that Guilford is ready to engage in challenging dialogues around inclusion. A campus prepared to engage in complex and difficult diversity work is where I want to be.”

After doing focused work on sexuality and gender identity/expression on two campuses, Stephanie went to the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to obtain her Masters in Education in College Student Administration. While at Penn State, she worked with student activities and leadership development programs, and delved into campus climate and student-athlete research.

Following her time at Penn State, Stephanie transitioned to the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). While at UMD, Stephanie studied and researched intergroup dialogue programs and taught undergraduate and graduate courses on diversity, privilege, oppression, facilitating intergroup dialogues and leadership development in multiple contexts.

Currently, Stephanie is working on completing her Ph.D. from UMD’s College Student Personnel and Administration program. Most recently, she has served as an adjunct faculty member for New England College’s Master of Science in Higher Education Administration program teaching a course titled Multicultural Competency.

Stephanie earned a Bachelor’s degree in African and Afro-American studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002, a Masters in Education in College Student Affairs at Pennsylvania State University in 2009, and anticipates finishing her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park, by the end of 2016.

“I am eager to work with students and the campus in social identity related experiences, sense of belonging, and the celebration of cultural histories and backgrounds,” Stephanie said. “I look forward to learning more about the needs of the campus and doing my best in my upcoming role in MED to address and attend to the important diversity, equity and inclusion needs of students, faculty and staff.”
